And the last team decided to do that process again. Then the next team took it and amped up the over the top personality. The original Duke Nukem was a bit over the top and a bit comically so. So the 2-dimensional sneaky (and sometimes comic) villains from the original Trek evolved into an honor-obsessed semi-religious warrior order 50 years later. Multiple teams of people took what came before and molded it only for a later team to remold it again. So this is more of an evolution similar to something like Klingons in the Star Trek universe. Duke Nukem 3D pushed the limits of the character into being more 'over the top' than before and then Duke Nukem Forever did the same thing. Starship Troopers was explicitly framed in terms of propaganda movies and even then a lot of people (myself included as a kid) did not see the satire.ĭuke Nukem, on the other hand, started out as a somewhat over the top side scrolling hero in the era of Mario and Commander Keen. Satire has a point or target and is not just 'edgy' humor for the sake of being 'edgy'. It is not a serious thing, but it is not satire. Like am I reading into it too much? Did we really just do this in the 2000's because I know things like Gears of War and again Manswers exist in earnest This genuinely has to be taking the piss. Clearly it's a morphed analog in and of itself but like. Like I know some people would tell you a satire has to be condemned within the text ala Johnny Bravo, but I think the amount of pastiche, references and parody servers a kind of hyper exaggeration of this kind toxic masculinity. Idk it feels like a parody or satire like Starship Troopers, it's clearly taking the piss, but it's not directly telling you that. The game is literally centered around this mans Ego and a male Power Fantasy. All the systems feel unreal, like you take steroids and drink to give yourself invincibility and "roid rage" It's that same kind of overt over the top kind of masculinity that you see in something like Micheal Bay's Pain and Gain it relishes in it but it's clearly a critique/making fun of these types. The constant narcissism and megalomania There's this constant 0-100 energy at all times.
It's soooo immature and over the top I just can't think of someone making this in earnest with lines like "Power armor is for pussies" mix that with things like the online capture the flag being capturing women who cover your eyes, who you litrally spank to stop from doing this? This with the fawning NPC women/groupies in the story, him signing his name for these fans. The fucking logo uses a waving American flag. Why do I say this? The shield is called EGO for fucks sake. I'm just baffled that this came out in earnest but I also understand this was the era of shows like Manswers
Like it feels like such an overt satire/parody of American masculinity and action film heroes. I know this is a silly question, but genuinely it feels like it, I don't think I've played or seen something this overtop in terms of how misogynistic it is, maybe I'm missing something as this is my first introduction to the character.
